Deliverables Based Planning
Presented by Amy Fowler, Managing Partner of Lewis & Fowler
Building project success around a credible plan is a good start. Executing that plan comes next. It is the combination of a credible plan and a competent execution team that dramatically increases a project’s chance of being successful. There are four core processes for assuring the success of any IT project. This session describes these processes, their interrelationships, and how these processes increase the probability of success for enterprise class programs. Chapter Meeting
When: Monday, September 8, 2008
Time: 5:45 PM - 7:30 PM

Integrating Risk Into Project Scheduling
Presented by Scott Brunton, Lewis & Fowler
Straightforward application of MS Project as a project-scheduling tool would use single-point duration estimates for individual task durations, which, is generally optimistic. A better approach would be to use the integrated PERT capability to apply multi-point estimates. In reality, duration estimates are best represented by a probabilistic distribution and start-to-finish completion times developed by iterated simulations of the schedule network against these distributions.

This presentation will review the PMI® process of risk management, discuss means of representing duration estimates within MS Project, and extend these concepts to provide advanced probability-based simulation and branching in project schedule execution through the use of a third party add-in.

Both events are free to MPA members.

PMI Chapter Meeting • May 8, 2008
Location:
Crowne Plaza Hotel, Colorado Springs, Colorado
Guest Speaker:
Glen B. Alleman, Vice President, Strategic Consulting and Performance Management for Lewis & Fowler
Workshop:
Risk Management in Five Easy Pieces
Time:
5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Risk management is essential for any significant project and is useful for any project where an unfavorable outcome is undesirable. In his workshop Glen shares how risks can be mitigated with a good risk management process.

This presentation surveys the essentials of programmatic risk management with five easy to remember ideas:
  • Hope is not a strategy
  • No point estimate of cost or schedule can be correct
  • Without integrating cost, schedule and technical performance the project manager is driving in the rear view mirror
  • Without a model for risk management the project manager is driving in the dark with the lights off
  • Risk communication is everything in risk management

Glen B. Alleman leads the Lewis & Fowler practices of Program, Planning and Controls, Strategy, and Performance Management for commercial, aerospace, and defense clients. Prior to joining Lewis & Fowler, Glen led one of the Program Management Offices at Department of Energy Environmental Technology Site at Rocky Flats in Golden Colorado. Glen’s experience includes program and project management in petrochemicals, pulp and paper, newspaper systems, industrial and commercial business environments. Starting with a physics background Glen developed signal processes algorithms for missile guidance systems, radar and sonar target recognition. With a Masters in Systems Management, Glen led software development teams in commercial and defense industries before moving to manage those teams and the projects they implemented.

Lean Product & Process Development Conference
Software-intensive products provide unique challenges, because software is invisible and theoretically it is easier to change than hardware. So software bears the brunt of change in a system, and often times it absorbs more than its share of complexity also. How can lean principles be applied to this environment?

In this panel, four industry leaders including Glen Alleman, Vice President, Strategy and Performance management with Lewis & Fowler will discuss how they apply lean and agile software development in their companies. From software embedded in everyday products to military systems to test software, the practitioners in this panel have grappled with some very tough problems. After summarizing their experiences, the panel will answer questions posed by moderator Mary Poppendieck, including questions submitted by the audience.

Join us to find out what lean is really like when applied to the really challenging problems of software-intensive product development.
